Biggar v GHK Saturday 23rd March

GHK travelled to Biggar for the last ‘out of town ‘ away match of the season – through the fence at Accies this week notwithstanding – with the proverbial ‘more in hope than expectation’ probably running through  most supporters’ minds. With some justification as Biggar sit well clear at the top of the league, having lost only once in their previous nineteen matches.

They have a very professional, well-organised  set up at Hartree Mill, with more evidence as their Ladies Day attracted over 100 to the pre-match lunch and the crowd assembled for kick off was several times that number.

It was to GHK’s credit that they kept the crowd fairly quiet for the first quarter of the match and the visitors were, indeed, still in the game at half time, with the score at 19-5, GHK’s score cmae after Biggar had taken the lead and came from a line out drive which saw Fraser Christie go over. Unfortunately, both Fraser and Lewis Brock, who had also been prominent in those early forward exchanges, were both forced to leave the field prior to half time, stretching GHK’s already depleted resources further.

Whilst GHK continued to show good spirit and defended well for long spells, Biggar added their bonus point try and a further four in the second half to bring the final score to Biggar 52 GHK 5.

Definitely one to file under ‘a hard day at the office.’ Endeavour and heart, whilst commendable, were never going to be enough against a well coached, physically proficient and confident team that Biggar are. We wish them well in National One next season and thanks to President Johnny Bogle and his off field team for the hospitable welcome.

With the postponement of several matches the previous weekend, GHK still need points from their last game of the season this Saturday to guarantee their place in National Two next season. The fact that the match is against closest neighbours and keenest rivals Glasgow Accies should ensure that a cracking match is in prospect at New Anniesland. All GHK supporters know where they need to be!
